I would suggest anything pay as you go. I would suggest a Verizon Wireless, although I have AT&T.

I have a TracPhone it works for me….no monthly bills….purchased at Walmart…..you do have to make sure what ever TracPhone you buy does work in the zip code you live…..I had one when I lived in the suburbs of Chicago and it worked fine and when I moved where I live now (80 miles away) the phone did not work…..it does need to be programed.

Unless you live in a large town if I were you I would check and make sure your coverage area is within your needs. Where I live in a lot of places I can’t get AT&T reception but US Cellular can!!! Check and see where the most towers are before you pick a plan!!

I’ve heard that any working cell phone can be used for 9-1-1 calls just for emergencies even without a subscription. We were asked to donate used cell phones to a woman’s shelter here in the city so that they could be used in case abused women were fearing for their safety. Might be worth checking into if you just want it for 9-1-1.
AAA offers a cell phone, large numbers and the lowest $ price is $10 plus 25 cents a minute, the next lowest is $20 per month and you get 250 minutes per month. Long distance is no additional cost to use for your minutes, if you have time left over you could use it for that.

It is my understanding that emergency call number 911 is operational even if you do not pay your monthly charge and loose the service that you were subscribed to. I have AT&T and find that to be a good provider for my needs.

Go to your local grocery store, they cell phones that you buy and just prepay to use, thats what my grandmother has.
If later you want one for more social reasons, then try jitterbug…it is a company that has designed its phone and service for older people (has no features and is basically just like a regular phone with big numbers).

I just got a new Verizon plan, {traded in my many minutes @ $65.00} for 50 anytime + 250 nites and weekend min..for $20.00. I also use it very seldom, usually just when I am traveling or long distance calls…I have used Verizon all over the US..& for 6 years..tried Sprint and sometimes when I really needed it {like when my mom was taken to the hospital & I found out 3 days later} it didn’t work..bought a new updated very basic phone for $80.00 with a $50.00 rebate..they do have cheaper phones that will serve your purpose..The 1st thing to put in it is ICE..in case of emergency..you can put several #s under that catagory..emergency personel are trained to check phones for emergency #s under the ICE letters.

I have a prepaid cell phone. It’s Virgin Mobile. The phone was only $14.95 and you buy a minute pack as needed. You do have to buy them every 30 days to keep from losing them. I didn’t think I needed on either, but feel safer having it with me when driving alone. I had to have help to activate it so you might to.

There are several pay-as-you-go plans. I use Virgin Mobile, pay $20 every three months, and since I only it for emergencies, I have a balance of more than $200. You never lose your paid-in-amount, unless you leave the program. Cost is 10 cents per minute after the first 10 minutes each day. Pre-paid cards and phones can be purchased at Best Buy, etc. I have had my account and phone for more than five years. Visit Virgin Mobile for full details and others answers.
